Honoring Indigenous Beauty: Behind the Scenes of The Culture Is: Indigenous Women

By Isaac Meyers | Celebrity Makeup Artist | Su’naaq Kodiak & Chitina Descent

Two years ago, I had the honor of contributing to a powerful and inspiring project: The Culture Is: Indigenous Women, hosted by the trailblazing Alyssa London. As an Indigenous celebrity makeup artist, I was proud to use my skills to help shape the visual identity of a series that celebrates Native women’s voices, resilience, and brilliance.

Filmed on Suquamish Land, Rooted in Story

The episode was filmed on the traditional lands of the Suquamish Tribe on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Surrounded by ancestral knowledge, natural beauty, and cultural power, the location offered a sacred space for storytelling and connection.

This project gave voice to Native women who are shaping modern identity while staying rooted in tradition—and I was honored to support those voices through professional Indigenous makeup artistry.

Working With Alyssa London

Alyssa London, the series’ host and a leading advocate for Indigenous media representation, brought depth, grace, and intelligence to the screen. My role was to provide her camera-ready makeup and hair styling that complemented her features while honoring her heritage and authenticity.

My approach as a Native makeup artist is always to amplify—not cover—natural beauty. When you’re telling important stories on camera, the look must be clean, strong, and culturally aligned. That’s what I delivered for Alyssa and this unforgettable project.

Indigenous Beauty Is Legacy, Not Trend

As someone from the Su’naaq Kodiak and Chitina tribes of Alaska, I see every makeup brushstroke as a contribution to cultural representation. Beauty, when approached with respect and purpose, can become a tool for reclamation and storytelling.

The Culture Is was more than a production—it was a reminder that Indigenous beauty is timeless, sovereign, and sacred.

How grateful I am to read the beautiful article on Indigenous Native Women. I celebrate the dedication the First Peoples continued connection to their culture, independence and persistence. I find it legendary to their ongoing history. I have loved how the integration into this lands customs that originally was theirs is now on their terms and time table . Change is here under their consent and discretion. It is their choice what they choose to incorporate, discover and add to their lives. Their beauty and talent is uniquely honest and real.
