Behind the Scenes at King 5: TV-Ready Makeup, Indigenous Beauty, and a Morning of Pure Joy
By Isaac Meyers – Seattle Celebrity Makeup Artist | immakeup.com
On a bright Monday morning, I had the privilege of joining King 5’s “New Day Northwest” for a segment celebrating Indigenous beauty brands and sharing my top summer-ready makeup tips for TV. As a Seattle-based, Alaskan Native makeup artist, this moment meant more than just being on screen — it was about bringing representation, artistry, and authenticity to the local airwaves.
The entire segment was a dream. The King 5 team welcomed us with warmth, humor, and professionalism. The green room was filled with laughter, beauty products, and a buzzing creative energy. One of the producers even joked that they’d never seen that much makeup backstage — and it honestly made me proud.
Indigenous-Owned Beauty Brands in the Spotlight
For this feature, I spotlighted two powerhouse Indigenous-owned brands: Prados Beauty and Cheekbone Beauty. These brands aren’t just gorgeous — they stand for sustainability, representation, and cultural identity. Their products deliver high-performance results while honoring Native roots, and I was proud to showcase them on such a visible platform.
As someone from the Su’naaq Kodiak and Chitina tribes, this wasn’t just another TV appearance — it was a deeply personal chance to uplift fellow Native creators and make space for Indigenous excellence in beauty media.
My Incredible Models
Big gratitude to my stunning models: Amelia, Chanel, and Sajali. Each of them brought grace, energy, and confidence to the studio. Whether we were color-matching with Prados Beauty complexion sticks or perfecting brows with Cheekbone’s pencils, their joy made the whole segment come alive.
The Magic of King 5
Kelly Hanson, the host of the segment, was full of energy and heart — the kind of person who makes you feel instantly comfortable, even with cameras rolling. Her genuine interest in the topic and excitement for Indigenous-owned beauty made the segment feel not just fun, but impactful.
The entire New Day Northwest staff deserves a standing ovation. From techs to producers, every person was kind, hilarious, and a joy to work with. When I say I’d come back in a heartbeat — I mean it.

The Three Looks I Created On Air
During the segment, I showcased three distinct makeup looks — each one designed to demonstrate how versatile, effective, and high-performance Indigenous-owned products can be for TV. The first look centered around a bold, lifted cheek using a rich blush palette that gave the skin a radiant, sculpted finish on camera. It created instant warmth and life under the studio lights — one of my favorite TV-ready tricks.
The second look focused on enhancing the eyes with a soft, smoky bottom lash line. I used a pencil liner under the eye and set it with powder shadow — perfect for definition without being too heavy for daytime TV. The final look featured a subtle contour using a deeper pencil shade to sculpt the face, paired with a nude pencil in the waterline to brighten and open the eyes. All three looks translated beautifully under the lights — modern, natural, and full of dimension.
What It Takes to Create TV-Ready Makeup
Makeup for live television is different than everyday glam. Under bright studio lights and HD cameras, the makeup has to:
- Control shine while keeping skin alive and fresh
- Be layered precisely for long wear and no flashback
- Enhance features without appearing heavy or cakey
- Stay intact for long filming blocks and close-ups
That morning, I used a mix of cream products, longwear formulations, and camera-friendly color palettes to ensure my models looked glowing on screen and in person. I kept it clean, sculpted, and radiant — because when you look your best, you perform your best.
A Shoutout to My Husband
This kind of success doesn’t happen solo. My husband was there with me every step of the way — helping with setup, logistics, emotional support, and keeping me calm in the chaos. He deserves just as much credit as anyone on that set, and I’m incredibly grateful to have him by my side in both life and career.
